Big Win for West Bengal Labourer

A migrant from Malda, West Bengal has been graced with good fortune as he won Rs 70 lakh on the Nirmal lottery on 22 October. Imam Hussein, who has been living in Kerala for the last five years is a regular lottery player. He finally won a substantial prize after purchasing five state lottery tickets with his wages. The winning ticket number was: NX 543296.
Hussein works as a day labourer in and around the suburbs of Edathanattukara. When he found out that he had won the Nirmal Lottery he kept his good fortune a secret, for fears of having his winning ticket stolen from him. So he called the local police station that Friday evening to explain his problem to them. This led to police from Nattukal station bringing him in for his own safety.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, VA Krishnadas, explained, “We contacted the co-operative bank immediately. But the bank officials said they would collect the ticket on Saturday. As Imam was afraid to part with his ticket, he stayed at the police station all night.”
P Sreenivasan, the Allanallur Service Co-operative Bank’s secretary added, “As documentation is necessary, Imam Hussein has been asked to bring us his Aadhaar and PAN cards, which are in his native place. Once the identification documents are received and processed, the amount will be credited to his bank account in two to three months.”
Hussein later said that he would like to build his own house and open up a shop with his winnings back in his hometown. He now feels able to share his excellent news with family and friends in Malda.
Earlier this year, in May, another West Bengal man, Pratibha Mandal, also won a bumper lottery prize, which was Rs 80 lakh on the Kerala Karunya Plus lottery. Mandal, who was working in construction, had been living in Kerala for four years. He described his win as “a pleasant surprise”.
